What is Sphinx Prep?
Sphinx PrepThe Sphinx Preparatory Music Institute @ Wayne State University is a tuition free program offering classes to Detroit students in music history, music theory/ear training and instrumental performance for ten Saturdays during both fall and winter semesters (20 weeks total). It serves string, woodwind, brass, percussion and piano instrumentalists, ages 11-18, with a focus on middle school students. The program is designed to address the needs of students in pursuit of music studies at beginning and intermediate levels who lack access to steady, balanced musical training.

Sphinx Prep is hosted by Wayne State’s Department of Music on Saturdays from 12:30-3:30 and consists of four 40 minute sessions and a networking period at the end of each Saturday. Once per semester, Sphinx Prep will feature a guest artist/ensemble in a performance, including potential performances by the Harlem Quartet. During this performance, Sphinx Prep students will also have the opportunity to perform.
