Sphinx Competition

What is the Competition?

  • Young Black and Latino string players compete for cash prizes and performance opportunities
  • Applicants are narrowed to 18 Semi-Finalists, 9 junior and 9 senior
  • The jury panel for the Finals consists of professionals from the field of classical music
  • Finalists get to perform with the professional all Black and Latino Sphinx Symphony Orchestra
  • All qualified semi-finalists receive access to scholarships and the Sphinx Instrument Fund.
  • Many of our Competition Alumni have gone on to study at prestigious music schools or joined major symphony orchestras

Who is Eligible?

  • Instrument categories are Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.
  • Participants in the Junior Division must not have reached their 18th birthday by the junior finals date. Participants in the Senior Division must be at least 18 years old but not have reached their 27th birthday by the senior finals date (check Sphinx.MyReviewRoom.com for specific dates) .
  • Participation is limited to current U.S. residents who are Black or Latino. For questions about eligibility, please contact Competition@SphinxMusic.org.
  • Participants must not have been a 1st Place Winner in their division in any previous Sphinx Competition

Where does the Competition take place?

The Sphinx Competition takes place every year in Detroit, MI.  Both junior division and senior division finals concerts take place at Orchestra Hall, the home of the Detroit Symphony.

When is the Competition?

The Sphinx Competition is an annual competition that happens in February.  Check the Sphinx.MyReviewRoom.com for date details.

When are applications due?

Applications are due in November.  Check the Sphinx.MyReviewRoom.com site for the exact date.  Late applications are not accepted.

How do I apply?

Go to Sphinx.MyReviewRoom.com, sign up for an account, and follow the instructions for application.
