Alberto Ubach
Mexican composer and guitarist, born August 11, 1958.
Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Alberto Ubach earned his Guitar Performer Diploma from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City; while he was there, he studied with Guillermo Flores Méndez and Guillermo Noriega. In 1982, he participated in the Superior Course of Music Interpretation, with prominent guitarist Andrés Segovia at the Conservatory of Music of Geneva in Switzerland. Ubach has also participated in master classes with guitarists Robert Guthrie, Christopher Parkening, and John W. Duarte.
Between 1987 and 1988, he studied orchestral conducting with Dr. Donald Barra at San Diego State University (SDSU). In 1990, the University of Baja California (UABC) honored him with its first Recognition for Academic Merit in the Field of Arts. In 1998, he received a grant from the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) to record the CD Homage to Manuel M. Ponce on the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death. In 2003, he wrote Diary 2003, a collection of 365 pieces for guitar; this massive work is represented by three CDs, which have been recorded by different artists. Ubach was inducted into Tijuana’s Hall of Fame in 2009. He now lives in Victoria BC, Canada, where he is Assistant Director of PJ Music Studios.
