Almeida Prado
Brazilian composer, born February 8, 1943, died November 21, 2010.
Brazilian composer Almeida Prado (or José Antonio Rezende de Almeida Prado) was born in Santos, São Paulo state, where he studied composition with Osvaldo Lacerda and Carmargo Guarnieri and piano with Dinorah de Carvalho. Besides studying with Ligeti and Foss during the composition course of Darmstadt in 1969, Almeida Prado studied with Clemente Terni in Santiago de Compostela and with Boulanger and Messiaen in Paris during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Almeida Prado won the Lili Boulanger Prize in 1970 and the Brazil Independence Prize in 1972. He directed the Municipal Conservatory at Cubatão and taught at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) for 25 years, being praised for his originality and aesthetic flexibility.
