Beatriz Bilbao
Venezuelan composer, born in 1951.
Beatriz Bilbao, one of the leading Venezuelan figures in choral composition, was born in 1951 in Caracas, Venezuela. She studied composition at the University of Wisconsin with Les Thimmig, and then at Indiana University with Juan Orrego-Salas, Eaton and Fred Fox. Bilbao’s collaboration with composer Ricardo Teruel and percussionist Edgar Saume Concierto de las tres esferas won the Previsora prize in 1989. In 1990, Bilbao became head of the composition department at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales in Caracas. Bilbao has won several Venezuelan composition prizes, and, in the 1990s, began implementing indigenous Venezuelan elements into her works.
