Dinorá Gontijo de Carvalho Munci

Brazilian composer and pianist, born June 1, 1897, died February 28, 1980.

Born in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Carvalho Muricy studied piano at São Paulo's Conservatório Municipal and in Paris with Isidor Philipp. While in São Paulo, she studied harmony, counterpoint, and composition with Lamberto Baldi and Martin Braunwieser. After studying conducting with Erns Meldich, Carvalho Muricy founded and directed São Paulo’s Orquesta Femenina, which was the first all-women orchestra in South America. Carvalho Muricy earned the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte prizes in 1969, 1971, and 1975, and was the first woman elected to the Academia Brasileira de Música. She produced approximately 400 compositions throughout her career, the majority of which are very influenced by nationalistic traditions, while the last period of her work explores atonality and serialism. The Ministério das Relações Exteriores (Brazil) published a catalog of her work in 1977.
