Ernst Mahle
Brazilian composer, born in January 3, 1929.
Ernst Mahle was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1929. Mahle started to study piano at 16 while he was still in Germany, but injuries prevented him from becoming a professional pianist. After that, Mahle turned his attention to composition.
The composer moved to São Paulo, Brazil, in 1951, to work in a factory. Mahle would work during the day and attend concerts and recitals at night, which led him to meet the composer and teacher Koellreuter, who taught him modern compositional techniques. Later, Mahle also studied abroad with Messiaen and Fortner.
During the 1960s, Mahle became a Brazilian citizen, and he won the composition competition from the Universidade da Bahia. He co-founded the Escola de Música de Piracicaba in 1953 (now called Escola de Musica de Piracicaba “Maestro Ernst Mahle”) and he is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music.
