Estela Bringuer
Argentinian composer and conductor, born June 3, 1918.
Conductor and composer Estela Bringuer was born June 3rd, 1918, in Jujuy, Argentina. Bringuer studied composition with Manuel de Falla and Jamie Pahissa, and conducting with Clemens Krauss. Bringuer has conducted the Orchestra of Radio Belgrano, the Filarmónica de Buenos Aires, and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Sodre in Montevideo, among others. On April 25th, 1967, Bringuer became the first woman to conduct the American Symphony Orchestra; she led the ensemble in a benefit concert at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall where they performed two of her works, a symphony and a piano concerto. In the United States, Bringuer has conducted the New York Philharmonic, the orchestra at the Berkshire Music Center of Boston, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Bringuer has earned awards from ASCAP, the Institution of Modern Art in Washington, and Columbia University.
