Evencio Castellanos
Venezuelan composer, pianist, organist and conductor, born May 3, 1915, died March 20, 1984.
Evencio Castellanos was born in Cúa, Venezuela, on May 3, 1915. Castellanos was a composer, pianist, organist and conductor; he studied organ under his father, Pablo Castellanos, and piano under Rafael Gonzáles Guía. Castellanos’ brother, Gonzalo Castellanos Yumar, is another esteemed Venezuelan composer, teacher and conductor. Castellanos assisted his father at several Caracas churches, and in 1931, became the organist of the Caracas Cathedral. A skilled organist and pianist, he performed his own Piano Concerto. After graduating from Escuela Superior de Música in 1945, he studied with Charles Bulhor at the Dalcroze School of Music. In 1946, Castellanos began his conducting career, eventually teaching and becoming director at his former school Escuela Superior de Música.
In the 1970s, Castellanos lived in Paris where he gave organ recitals. Throughout his lifetime, Castellanos created secular works, operatic works, and even chamber music in a wide-spanning range of repertoire. Evencio Castellanos passed away in Caracas, Venezuela, March 20, 1984, just after he started teaching organ at the Conservastorio Juan Josė Landaeta.
