Federico Álvarez del Toro

Mexican composer and guitarrist, born November 16th, 1953.


Born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico, Federico Alvarez del Toro is a guitarist and composer whose music combines both traditional and modern practices which presents ecological perspectives. At the Escuela Nacional de Música de la UNAM and el Conservatorio Nacional de Música, Alvarez studied under the direction of Eduardo Matta and Rodolfo Halffter. Besides his studies in composition, Alvarez additionally studied guitar in 1971 with Guillermo Flores and had classes with world renowned guitarist, Leo Brouwer.

Composing pieces for orchestra, chamber and solo instrument, Alvarez is known to dabble in a wide variety of genres. Many of his works are inspired by the Mesoamerican forests, a landscape found in his home region of Chiapas. A recipient of numerous awards including the National Youth prize in Music, the Diploma of the Union of Theater and Music Writers, and the Chiapas Prize, his music has been performed across the United States, Europe and Africa.
