Federico Ruiz Hurtado

Venezuelan composer born February 8, 1948.


Federico Ruiz Hurtado was born in Caracas, Venezuela, February 8, 1948. Ruiz Hurtado studied composition with Vicente Emilio Sojo, Primo Casale, and Evencio Castellanos at the José Angel Lamas Conservatory in Caracas. Additionally, he spent time studying modern composition with Yannis Ioannidis, electro-acoustic music with Eduardo Kusnir, and Choral and Orchestral Conducting with Silvia Eisenstein and Gonzalo Castellanos.

Ruiz Hurtado has won several competitions in Venezuela for his compositions, including the José Angel Lamas National Prize for orchestral music. His compositions include choral and chamber works, music for film and theatre, and electro-acoustic music. Ruiz Hurtado was also the director of the Cantaclaro vocal ensemble, where he promoted Venezuelan and Latin American traditional and popular genres from 1976 to 1994. His works showcase European and modernist traditions, influences from his training.
