Fernando Cataño Mendoza was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He studied contrabass and composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of the INBA under the direction of Luis Hernández, Juan León Mariscal, Blas Galindo, and Rodolfo Halffter.
