Gerardo Tamez
Mexican composer and guitarist, born May 6, 1948.
Gerardo Tamez was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 6th, 1948. He studied music in Mexico City, both at the Escuela Nacional de Música of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and then at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. He later studied harmony and analysis at the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Musicales Ramatinime, and then graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He has since studied guitar and composition with Leo Brouwer, Abel Carlevaro and Guillermo Flores Méndez.
In addition to solo performances, he founded and toured with ensembles, such as Los Folkloristas, Terceto de Guitarras de la Ciudad de México and Ensamble Tierra Mestiza. He was able to learn about traditional Mexican music while playing in Mexico. He has participated in numerous conferences, including the 2010 National American Harp society conference, the 2009 “La música en México” symposium, and the 2009 International Guitar Festival in Costa Rica. He has also been internationally recognized with awards, such as the Medalla Bellas Artes in 2018 from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. Támez writes for film, television, theater, and radio.
