Homero de Sá Barreto

Brazilian composer, born March, 1884, died December, 1924.


Homero de Sá Barreto was a pianist and composer born in the city of Cravinhos (São Paulo State). His musical studies took place in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Among his teachers were Alfredo Bevilacqua (piano) and Frederico Nascimento (harmony).

Homero was known as a great interpreter of Chopin, and his works were played in Niterói, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In 1925, his work was conducted by Villa-Lobos at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. His pieces were frequently heard on the Brazilian Radio.

In 1914, Homero helped to found the Escola de Música Fluminense, in Niterói.
