Mario Stern Feitler

Mexican composer, born May 12, 1936, died December 28, 2017.


Mario Stern Feitler was born on May 12th, 1936, in Mexico City. He began his musical education with Jesús Bal y Gay and Rodolfo Halffter at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música at the INBA in Mexico, and with Harald Genzmer at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, Germany. He later received a scholarship from the French government to study composition at the École Normale de Musique in Paris with professors Pierre Schaeffer and Henri Dutilleux. Between 1956 and 1964, Stern studied at the chemistry school at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he became an industrial chemist. He also studied ancient Greek, Latin and philosophy during his time at UNAM.

After completing his education, Stern went on to teach at a variety of institutions, including what is now la Facultad de Nacional de Música (UNAM).  He was also the president of la Liga de Compositores de Música de Concierto de México, and participated in a number of other musical societies in membership and leadership roles. He received many commissions from various orchestras, as well as financial support through scholarships from other institutions. He continued to teach subjects such as aural skills, musical analysis and pedagogy. His works have been chosen for performances at the Foro Internacional de Música Nueva, the Encuentro Universitario de la Composición en México and for the Encuentro Universitario de las Humanidades y las Artes.
