Osvaldo Lacerda

Brazilian composer, born March 23, 1927, died July 18, 2011.


Brazilian composer and music educator, Osvaldo Lacerda was born in 1927 in the city of São Paulo, where he studied harmony with Ernesto Kierski during the late 1940s. In Brazil, Osvaldo Lacerda studied with Camargo Guarnieri, and in 1963 he won a fellowship that allowed him to study with Vittorio Giannini and Copland in the United States.

Besides being a successful composer and still having his works frequently performed around the world today, Osvaldo Lacerda was an active educator, publishing books used in music schools from Brazil and Portugal. Additionally, he taught at the Escola Municipal de Música in São Paulo.
