Ricardo Castro

Mexican composer and pianist, born February 7, 1864, died November 27, 1907.

Ricardo Castro was born in Durango, Mexico. He began studying with Pedro H. Ceniceros and later attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música where he studied piano with Juan Salvatierra, Melesio Morales, and later with the distinguished pianist Julio Ituarte. During the year of 1903, Castro traveled around Europe giving masterclasses and studied with Teresa Carreño and Eugen D’Albert. He is often credited with composing the first Mexican cello and piano concerto. Castro’s music often represents European romantic traditions while producing some of the most complex usages of harmonic progressions and chromaticism.
