Mexican composer and violinist, born March 24, 1906, died February 13, 1993.


Simón Tapia Colman was born on March 24th, 1906 in Aguarón, Zaragoza, Spain. He studied at the Real Conservatorio de Música de Zaragoza with Ramón Barobia, and at the Real Conservatorio de Música de Madrid with Conrado del Campo. In 1925, Tapia Colman received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Paris to study with Vincent d’Indy. When he returned to Spain, he founded the Cuarteto Colman and the Orquesta Colman, both of which performed throughout Spain and North Africa. In 1935, after already having a significant number of compositions published, Tapia Colman studied with Paul Hindemith. He traveled to Mexico after the Spanish Civil War and played the violin in the Orquesta Sinfónica de México. In 1940, he founded el Coro del Colegio Ruíz de Alarcón and served as concertmaster for the Sinfónica Nacional de México.

He began experimenting with his compositions, utilizing new forms, instrumentations, and genres. Colman also worked a lot within research, and wrote various musicological works, such as Técnica abreviadisima del violín, El solfeo en nueve lecciones and Reflexiones musicales.
